Welcome! to Tagore Government Arts & Science College, Puducherry
The Department of Chemistry, Tagore Govt. Arts & Science College, Puducherry had its inception in 1961-62 when the college was founded, offering chemistry at the Pre-University Course level. In the next year, allied chemistry was introduced as an ancillary subject at the degree level. The department was upgraded in 1971-72, when B.Sc. Chemistry Main was started. A further expansion took place in 1981-82 with the inception of the Post-Graduate course - M.Sc. Chemistry. In 1989-90, the M.Sc. course was transferred to the newly-evolved Centre for Post-Graduate Studies in the same campus.
Since September 1997, the department has been functioning in the ground-floor of a newly constructed Science Block with 1,154 sq.m of floor area, incorporating three well-equipped laboratories and three lecture halls, besides staff-rooms, store rooms and a computer room. The department at present offers Three-year B.Sc. Chemistry course under the semester pattern CBCS - Choice Based Credit System with 25% internal assessment component from 2017-18 batch onwards, with an annual intake of 60 students in the Main course, besides Chemistry as an allied subject for the B.Sc. Physics, Botany and Zoology courses of the college.
The CBCS Course curriculum of our B.Sc. Chemistry program is well designed and very promising. The core course would help to enrich the subject knowledge of the students in all major branches of chemistry (eg. organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, nano, green chemistry, computational chemistry, etc.) and also in inter-related subjects like mathematics, physics, and zoology as allied subjects. It helps the students to increase their confidence level in the field of both academia and industry. The introduction of Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) would promote more powerful knowledge not only in their core Chemistry subject but also in interrelated multidisciplinary realms imparting the students’ multidimensional learning experiences through theoretical contents and practical exposure to the present front. The inclusion of Discipline Specific Courses (DSE) has opened-up an opportunity for the students to strengthen their knowledge naturally in industrially important useful materials. Generic electives make a perfect integration among various interdisciplinary courses to accomplish the vision and mission of designing the course.
The course exposes our students to cultivate a unique foreground in the important concepts of chemistry and learn excellent laboratory techniques. Thus they gain both theoretical as well as practical knowledge of handling chemicals. Students exercise their talents both in theory and practical chemistry. They get sufficient knowledge and practical skill to join higher studies of their choice. Students achieve the skills required to succeed in their careers in various chemical industries like pharmaceutical industry, plastic industry, cement industry, agro products industry, paint industry, rubber industry, petrochemical industry, food processing industry, fertilizer industry, consumer products like perfumes, cosmetics etc., Our students also get placed in teaching, science writing, software development and research. companies, forensic science departments, environmental science & engineering, toxicology, etc.
In brief the student graduated with our curriculum would be able to disseminate subject knowledge along with necessary skills to suffice their capabilities for academia, entrepreneurship and industry.
