By the enthusiastic efforts of Dr. K. Narayanan and Dr. A. Durairangam, the Department of Philosophy was started in the year 1988 offering the Undergraduate Course B.A. Philosophy and Indian Culture. As the work-load in teaching increased with the admission of the second batch students, hourly-paid lecturers have been appointed. Dr. B.R. Shanthakumari, Dr. Saratha, Dr. Venkatalakshmi, Dr. E.J. Manimaran, Dr. James Kurian, and Dr. Sujatha worked in this Department as hourly-paid lecturers for a short period.

The Department of Philosophy started offering the course on B.A. Philosophy, Yoga and Cultural Tourism from 1996 - 1997 onwards in place of B.A. Philosophy and Indian Culture. All India tours were conducted for students as study-tour-programmes.
With the introduction of the textual study of Patanjali Yoga Sutra, the title of the course offered as B.A. Philosophy, Yoga and Cultural Tourism was then changed into B.A. Philosophy, Yoga and Indian Culture from the academic year 2007 - 08. Yoga training was also given to the final year students of this Department.
Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) was introduced from the academic year 2017 - 2018. The title of the course offered as B.A. Philosophy, Yoga and Indian Culture was then changed into B.A. Philosophy from the academic year 2017 - 2018 onwards.
The scope of this UG Degree Programme in Philosophy includes introduction of the studetns to the concept of logic, Critical Thinking, History of Philosophy (Eastern and Western) covering the epistemology, metaphysics, ethics (theoretical and applied), social and political aspects, culture, Values, Yoga and Feminism, Human Rights and Environmental Awareness.
